Specialist Jeremiah Pulaski, United States Army, heroically distinguished himself by exceptional valorous conduct in the face of the enemy of the United States as a dismounted Rifleman for 3'd Platoon, Alpha Company, 1-87 fI\T, Task Force Summit, in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM.

On 8 December 2010, SPC Pulaski distinguished himself with acts of gallantry during a dismounted movement in Kunduz Province, Afghanistan. During a Joint mission alongside the Afghan Border Police, 3'd Platoon moved through the village of Haruti in search of a weapons cache. As Alpha team moved east across an open field between compounds, they were caught in a near ambush from two locations. Both positions opened fire with PKM, AK-47 and 30mm grenade launchers. Realizing that both the lead team and the HQ element were pinned down in an open field and taking heavy fire, SPC Pulaski moved to a position south west of the HQ element and engaged the enemy fighters. This action drew fire away from the pinned down elements and allowed them to crawl to safety SPC Pulaski then led the charge as his fire team rushed toward the contact across an open field to an unfortified position.

SPC Pulaski immediately laid down accurate fire upon the enemy locations and wounded one fighter. He continued to locate and engage Taliban fighters as his team wounded an additional two fighters at the southern ambush location forcing the enemy to displace. Taliban at the northern position then shifted their fires and began engaging his team with 30mm Grenades. When two rounds of 30mm landed within two meters of SPC Pulaski, the patrol leader gave Bravo team an order to displace from their position. With no regard for his own safety, SPC Pulaski heroically maintained his tenuous position and provided covering fire while his fire team moved behind him to safety.

SPC Pulaski's actions attrite the enemy force and saved the lives of the members
of HQs element who were pinned down by enemy fire. After an exhaustive search for the cache, 3rd platoon was given the order to withdraw from the objective. Within five minutes they were ambushed from fighters who had massed within the town. The Patrol Leader told SPC Pulaski to act as a base of fire as the rest of his Platoon bounded to the west. SPC Pulaski stoically maintained his position with the PL as they suppressed the enemy. After three successive bounds under constant enemy fire, 3'd Platoon found themselves trapped and surrounded inside a large compound. SPC Pulaski was positioned with the accompanying EOD and identifying that there was no alternate egress routes out of the compound, SPC Pulaski directed that EOD blow an exit door in the opposite direction of the enemy fighters. As EOD attempted to breach the western wall, SPC Pulaski overheard people speaking on the opposite side of the wall. He used the language assistant to determine that it was Taliban fighters who were staged in an ambush on the other side. SPC Pulaski used three grenades to engage the threat. His direct actions killed a Taliban provincial shadow governor for the Kunduz province, wounded two additional fighters and saved the lives of his squad.

Through his distinctive accomplishments and exemplary duty performance, SPC Pulaski reflected great credit upon himself, Task Force Summit, 1st Brigade, l0th Mountain Division and the United States Army.

While we were distracted by the glitz of the Cannes Film Festival, an important, brave film was quietly making waves one town over. A mere 40 minutes down the road, independent feature I Am Still Here took Best Feature at the Nice International Film Festival.

The film follows 10-year-old Layla, played by Aliyah Conley, during the first 48 hours of her abduction. She is sold into the sex trade and battles to escape the clutches of her captors.

A word of warning: the trailer depicts some pretty harrowing stuff. In one scene Layla is curled up, crying in a bathroom while a man looms over her. In another she sobs 'I want my mummy' after waking up in a strange room, dizzy and disorientated.

recently completed short film “Only Light” is one of those rare films that deals
with a subject matter that isn’t often spoken about, or brought to attention – that
of human sex trafficking.

The films
tells what happens when a young girl is kidnapped from the Democratic Republic of
the Congo, and sold as a sex worker in the U.S., and who finds an escape from
reality by watching a teenage girl next door.

Thembi Banks, and produced by Zac Skipp and Elena Ostromouva, and starring Kennedy
Zimet, Brooke McNeal, Michael Beach, Aaron Spears, Michole White, Ms. Castine made the film as part of USC Cinema’s
Advanced Production class, where she was the first African-American female

Ms. Castine wanted to direct a film about such a difficult and disturbing topic

Several years ago, Tim Ballard, who had served as a U.S. government agent for a dozen years, went rogue — but in a good way. While working as a special agent for the Department of Homeland Security, Ballard, a devout Mormon, infiltrated child-trafficking rings by posing as a pedophile. But he grew frustrated by the red tape. So, in 2013, Ballard left the department and started Operation Underground Railroad, or OUR, a private organization that conducts so-called “extraction operations” to free child sex slaves and bring their captors to justice.

Funded almost entirely by donations, the OUR team is comprised of more than a dozen staff members and volunteers, almost all of them ex-military or paramilitary, including former Navy SEALS, Special Forces operatives, and CIA agents. According to Foreign Policy, most of them, like Ballard, are Mormon. So-called brand ambassadors include professional actors, singers, and a “Dancing With The Stars” contestant. Some of them have even participated in operations, which typically entail OUR agents posing as “clients” to bait the traffickers so local authorities can nab them. It’s a motley crew, to say the least, and OUR’s mission, as stated on its website, is an ambitious one: “to bring an end to child slavery.”

Human trafficking is one of the world’s fastest growing criminal enterprises, according to the United Nations. A multibillion-dollar industry that spans the globe, and is especially robust in developing countries, trafficking affects an estimated 20.9 million people worldwide, including roughly 5.5 million children, a great many of whom are marketed for sex. According to the advocacy group Free The Slaves, there are more slaves on Earth today than there have been at any other point in history, even at the height of the transatlantic slave trade.

Despite its deep roots in the U.S. intelligence community, and the fact that it works closely with local governments to carry out its missions under deep cover, OUR is not media-shy. In fact, the organization has been meticulous in chronicling its numerous exploits around the world. A disguised film crew is generally present to document the operations with hidden cameras, often in real time, for the purpose of raising awareness and, of course, more donations. Much of that footage will be featured in an upcoming documentary titled “The Abolitionists,” which is set to debut in select theaters across the United States on May 16. Here’s the trailer:

Featuring brutally candid testimony, The Storm Makers is a chilling exposé of Cambodia’s human trafficking underworld and an eye-opening look at the complex cycle of poverty, despair and greed that fuels this brutal modern slave trade. More than half a million Cambodians work abroad and a staggering third of these have been sold as slaves. Most are young women, held prisoner and forced to work in horrific conditions, sometimes as prostitutes, in Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan.

The film tells its story from the perspectives of a former slave whose return home is greeted with bitterness and scorn by her mother; a successful trafficker — known in Cambodia as a “storm maker” for the havoc he and his cohorts wreak — who works with local recruiters to funnel a steady stream of poor and illiterate young people across borders; and a mother who has sold to the recruiter not only local girls, but also her own daughter.

At the age of 16, Aya was sold to work as a maid in Malaysia. She was exploited and beaten and eventually ran away, only to be captured and raped. When she returns home with an infant son, she is just as poor as when she left. Her mother greets her not with joy, but with anger that her daughter has come back with yet another mouth to feed instead of money. “I should have died over there,” says Aya in a singsong, childlike voice that masks the horrors she endured.

The young people from her remote village have migrated to work abroad. Empty houses are left behind. Cambodians call places like Aya’s village “ghost towns.” Suon and his assistant director, Phally Ngoeum, researched and filmed for three years, spending long periods in Cambodia’s villages and cities, and were able to gain the trust of both the victims and perpetrators of trafficking.

Pou Houy, 52, is a successful trafficker who runs a recruitment agency in Phnom Penh and claims to have sold more than 500 girls. Shockingly outspoken and shameless, he expresses no remorse and sees himself as a smart businessman, a good provider and even a good Christian. Although his company has been accused of trafficking by the local media, he has never been investigated by the police and continues to recruit young and poor Cambodians to work abroad.

Pou Houy’s enterprise relies on local recruiters, who bring him candidates from their rural communities. One of these is Ming Dy, who sold her own daughter and continues to supply Houy with new recruits from her village. She justifies her actions by claiming she has no other way to pay her bills.

In one wrenching scene, Ming Dy’s husband cannot bring himself to speak to his daughter when she calls from a new job abroad, where she earns a dollar a day. “I told my wife not to sell young people from the village,” he says. “Buddha condemns those who sell people like animals. I could have sold the bike and the oxen to pay back our debts. . . . But this money will bring us bad luck.” In another, a woman shows a picture of her 20-year-old daughter, who committed suicide in Cambodia after being trafficked. “She was so pretty,” says Ming Dy. The mother tearfully warns a new candidate for migration, “Don’t go abroad, girl!”

Pou Houy, the trafficker, supports not only his immediate family, but a dozen or so other relatives as well. His modern home, fancy car and concrete driveway contrast sharply with his relatives’ house right next door and its dirt road. But food is plentiful, and they are all better off than most people. “Does the trafficker feel regret?” asks Suon. “He was starving before, and made a promise to himself never to be poor again. From his point of view, in Cambodia you have only two choices: You are either a slave or a trafficker.”

How can a country descend into a state where trafficking family members and neighbors becomes acceptable? “Five or six years ago, during the financial crisis, a lot of factories shut down in Cambodia,” says Suon. “Hundreds of thousands lost their jobs and had to find a way to earn money. Trafficking networks took power because they were able to send thousands and thousands of people abroad — for them it was a golden opportunity, because people were starving.”

The film explores not only the political and economic roots of human trafficking but also the moral choices being made by those on both sides of the equation. Asks Suon: “Would you sell your neighbor or even your own child to a trafficking network in order to save your family? Which one of your children would you sacrifice? What becomes of your humanity once you decide to exploit another human being for profit?

“Cambodian migrants have been reduced to the status of slaves. They are transparent, or worse, completely invisible. I want migrants like Aya to feel free in front of the camera, allowing words to serve as therapy and an escape from the past.”
